The M.A.F.A. : The House of French-American Frenship of Château-Thierry (Aisne-France)

Wadsworth, Delegate of the Committee of Foreign Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States.


This work was created in memory of fallen U.S. soldiers around Chateau-Thierry, instead of raising a monument of stones Missions committee assignments built a monument to life in order to help rebuild devastated regions.

In 1931, after 12 years of constant action for the benefit of the inhabitants of the region of Chateau-Thierry, Committee of U.S. mission donated by deed to the town of Chateau-Thierry. A condition of this donation will be to keep this building as social work by the town of Chateau-Thierry.

Social Center offered to individual adults and children opportunities to develop the following activitiesKindergarden, medical consultation for infants, library, English classes, dance classes, lodging Charities and humanitarian assocsiations.

The building was poorly maintained for many years, quickly fell into disuse and was closed for unsafe, neglected. Richard W. Roosevelt and Cordelia Roosevelt during inauguration new MAFA

In 2008, with the arrival of the new Mayor of Chateau-Thierry, Mr Jacques Krabal, an ambitious restoration of this building is launched, the idea to revive this place marked by friendship and brotherhood between men is on the march. Cordelia Roosevelt and Roosevelt during opening new MAFA <br> The working site is already running, the museum opened July 13, 2009 in the presence of numerous political figures, representatives of national institutions and Mr Richard Williams Roosevelt, nephew of Quentin Roosevelt and great grand son of Theodore Roosevelt and Cordelia Roosevelt , great grand cousin of Quentin Roosevelt.

The mayor of Chateau-Thierry is actively seeking monetary aid from individuals, private institutions or public interest in maintaining the chain of the Franco-American brotherhood beyond any political divide, if you also have records or 14-18 WWI artefacts your donations will be welcome.

lancement des travaux de la nouvelle MAFAAprès la première guerre mondiale, le vieil hôtel de l’éléphant très délabré par les bombardements fut acheté et transformé en centre social, par le docteur Julian S. Wadsworth, délégué du comité des missions étrangères de l’Eglise Méthodiste Episcopale des Etats-Unis.
Cette œuvre fut crée en souvenir des soldats américains tombés autour de Château-Thierry, au lieu d’élever un monument de pierres le comité des missions édifia un monument de vie dans le but d’aider au relèvement des régions dévastées.
Hourges Orchard Cemetery

Eleven of the burials are unidentified but a special memorial commemorates one casualty known to be buried among them.


Roye new British cemetery

united_kingdom_roye_01_jc_gutner_2008Roye New British Cemetery was made after the Armistice of 1918 when graves were brought from the battlefields and other cemeteries relocation.

The cemetery contains 565 Commonwealth burials (481 United Kingdom soldiers, 69 Canadian soldiers, 14 South African soldiers and 1 Australian soldiers) and commemorations. 153 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials are erected to 13 casualties known or believed to be buried among them.

Hangard wood British Cemetery

united_kingdom_bouchoir_06_jc_gutner_2008The cemetery contains 141 Commonwealth burials (39 soldiers from United Kingdom, 3 soldiers from Australia, 59 soldiers Canadian, 1 South African), 39 of which are unidentified. There are also 14 French soldiers burials in the cemetery.
